I particularly enjoy the following statement on pg. 69, section IR-5.2 of the Red Book:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe final vowels of multiplicative prefixes should not be elided (although \u2018monoxide\u2019, rather than \u2018monooxide\u2019, is an allowed exception because of general usage).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

So, if we are to follow “the rules,” we should not drop the letters when using prefixes…<\/span><\/p>\n

But because the general population drops the vowel for a single compound (carbon monoxide versus carbon monooxide), chemists will drop the vowel for various compounds involving oxygen \u2013 of course, only when it sounds good. And, of course, tell you that’s how it should be… <\/span><\/p>\n

Weak, right?<\/span><\/p>\n
