RECOMMENDED TOOLS

This page is soley for the purpose of learning about the tools of the architecture trade and their role in the field. Fullerton College nor do the Professors endourse any particular brands. It is up to the individual to research and determine what specific tools are right for them.

The T-Square is a drafing tool. It is used to make horizontal lines and brace the triangles for vertical lines.

In architectural drafting the Lettering Guide is used to create horizontal lines for lettering (writing architecturally) information on plans.

Drafting Dots are used to secure your tracing/paper to a drafting/table. The best thing about drafting dots is that they are reusable. You can get several uses out of one dot and it still will do the job it is intended to do.

Flair Pens are a great tool to have. These are used to enhance thick lines and notes. These pens are also used to draft plans for presentation. The contrast from the ink and paper make for a solid presentation.

Metal Ruler is a necessary tool to have when model making. The metal edge allows for precision cuts without damage to the ruler or blade of the knife. A 20″ ruler is best to have for cutting big material into smaller pieces. Smaller metal rulers are encourage to have for finer cuts but not necessary.

White Glue is the best tool for modeling. It take a while to dry, the techniques you will learn in class will allow for work to continue to flow and time will not be wasted.

An Architect’s Scale ruler is designed for use in determining the actual dimensions of a distance on a scaled drawing. Most architectural, construction and engineering drawings and blueprints are scaled to allow for large areas, structures or items to conveniently fit on a reasonable size of paper.

The Erasing Shield is a great tool to have when manual drafting or sketching ideas. This tool allows you to precisely erase what you want, while preserving what you need. Do not crease or bend this tool, it will lose it’s effectiveness.

Skecthbooks; every architect | designer | inventor has a sketchbook. Sketchbooks are used for practicing sketching as well as design ideas and development of said ideas. Documentation of ideas is vital to keeping ideas, there is a reason why all of the above mentioned professions always use them.

The LED Lightbox Board is a great tool to have. Sometimes when designing it can be difficult to see multiple layers of tracing paper and the lines within each sheet. The lightbox board takes away any visual confusion. This is also great to use when combining ideas into one sheet of bond paper. (regular printer paper thickness)

Multi-Purpose Chipboard is one of the best materials to use in model making. The recommended size to buy is 26″ x 38″

A Mechanical Pencil Set is great to have. The set should include various mechanical pencil sizes such as 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9. These are great to have when you are drafting and need to create thicker or thinner lines quickly.

High Polymer Erasers are a manual drafters saving grace! These plastic erasers, we’ve found, are the best to use. When drafting and sketching, paired with the erasing shield, these tools are critical to manual drafting, because mistakes and changes to plans happen.

Pigment Fine Liner Pen Set is great to have. Much like the mechanical pencil set, the set should include various pen sizes such as 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9. These are great to have when you are drafting and need to create thicker or thinner lines quickly. They make for great presentations and quality of contrast in sketches | plans | notes.

Dual Tip Alcohol Based Markers are a great tool to have for illustrations. The dual tip allows for thicker lines and thinner line put down. These are used for renderings. Renderings were traditionally done by hand, now they are mostly computer generated. However, there are some firms that stick to tradition. These are also great to have for concept development and notes. Using different colors to create notes and legends helps with clarity of notes.

Foam Board is another great material used for model making. It is great for foundations and generally presenting your models on with a site.

In architectural drafting we use two Triangles the 30|60|90 triangle and the 45|45|90 Triangle. Triangles are used to make vertical and diagonal lines. The triangles are used with the T-Square to create vertical lines are perpendicular to the T-Square. The Triangles can also make various angles since the angles are already predetermined by the triangular shape.

Tracing Paper Rolls (12″ is fine) are a architect’s time savers! The tracing paper is used to develop and explore concepts prior to commiting to drafting a set of plans. This speeds up the design process 100 fold. Do not go without this tool!

The Compass is a great tool to have. This tool is great for drafting various sizes of circles and arcs. This tool eliminates the amount of stencils one would have to collect to draft circles and arcs.

Modeler’s Knife Set are great to have for making models. The variety of blades and handels allows for various cuts and precision needed in model making.

Self Healing Cutting Mat is necessary to have for model making. The Modeler’s Knife set will cut through cardboard and into a table, not good. A size A-3 (18″ x 12″) or bigger is what we recommend.
